I fell in love with the art of Larry Poncho Brown many years before I ever met the artist. His work is a reflection of what it is to be a person of color: the triumphs and struggles, the outspokenness, the unfettered commitment to family, unity and cultural pride; the sensuality, spirituality and music. Poncho's style is uniquely his own, even as he shapes and works that style to match his artistic vision. I am proud to say that my very first original artwork was by Poncho, but I also own many of his lithograph prints, several giclees, and the giclee colors are breathtaking to behold! In addition, I have purchased his wearable art and gift items for the home and workspace. I am highly impressed by his meticulous attention to detail and the quality of each item, and still own and wear a t-shirt that is over 25 years old! I admit I have gotten carried away, but I intend to share my collection with family members who are just now awakening to the importance of black art...a message that Poncho espouses. We need to see images that represent every day working folk...strong fathers, loving mothers, the pride of young black men, the beauty of black women. Self-love and self-esteem is where it all begins, and what better way to nurture that than to see positive reflections of ourselves and our culture. Buy black art, but buy it from black artists like the incomparable Larry Poncho Brown.

What can I say about my art collection of pieces by Larry Poncho Brown...  At first, I thought I'd just pick up a piece or two. What happened was I became transfixed...the art so resonated with me.

From his use of color to the subjects and objects depicted, they all have meaning---family, parental love, religion, romance, marriage, body and form.

They offer for me the historical perspective of Black life, captures our culture and visits every aspect of Black culture -- from the cradle to old age, even dementia and everything in between. His rendering of our musical history and development is captured in his jazz series. All of this is represented in my personal collection.

Several collaborations between Poncho and several other artists are happily in my collection, cohesiveness of purpose and vision are apparent. There's so much more I could say, but the emotions wrought from viewing the art speaks volumes beyond what I can articulate here. You must experience it for yourself.
